Who is Michel Rolland?
We’re having a wine tasting on April 24th featuring wines from Michel Rolland’s Mariflor line from his Argentinian properties. While he is a household name in the wine world, we thought an introduction was in order.
Michel Rolland is a renowned French oenologist whose influence has profoundly shaped the global wine industry. Born on December 24, 1947, in Libourne, France, Rolland was immersed in viticulture from an early age, growing up on his family's estate, Château Le Bon Pasteur in Pomerol. His deep-rooted passion for winemaking led him to pursue studies at the School of Viticulture and Oenology at La Tour Blanche and later at the University of Bordeaux, where he graduated in 1972. It was during his time at university that he met his future wife and professional partner, Dany Rolland.
In 1973, the Rollands acquired an oenological laboratory in Libourne, marking the beginning of Michel's journey as a consulting oenologist. His approach emphasized understanding the vineyard, soil, and the people behind each wine, steering him towards a hands-on role in the field rather than a purely laboratory-based practice. This philosophy resonated with many vintners, and by the 1980s, Rolland's reputation had begun to flourish.
Rolland's consultancy expanded rapidly, and he became known as one of the first "flying winemakers," a term used to describe oenologists who travel extensively to advise wineries worldwide. His portfolio boasts collaborations with over 150 wineries across 13 countries, including prestigious estates such as Harlan Estate and Staglin Family Vineyards in Napa Valley, Ornellaia in Italy, and Casa Lapostolle in Chile. His influence is particularly notable in Argentina, where he played a pivotal role in elevating the quality and reputation of Argentine wines on the global stage.
Rolland's signature style is characterized by producing wines that are rich in ripe fruit flavors, well-structured, with round tannins and prominent oak influence. This approach has been both lauded and critiqued; while many appreciate the accessibility and appeal of his wines, others argue that this style may overshadow the unique terroir of individual regions.
Beyond his consultancy, Rolland owns several properties in Bordeaux, including Château Bertineau Saint-Vincent in Lalande de Pomerol, Château Rolland-Maillet in Saint-Émilion, Château Fontenil in Fronsac, and Château La Grande Clotte in Lussac-Saint-Émilion. He has also ventured into joint partnerships in South Africa, Spain, and Argentina, further showcasing his commitment to global viticulture.
Throughout his illustrious career, Michel Rolland has remained a central figure in modern oenology, continually adapting to industry changes and influencing winemaking practices worldwide. His dedication to the craft and his ability to meld traditional techniques with innovative approaches have solidified his legacy as a maestro of modern winemaking.
